Is Your Foreign Spouse on Your Korean Resident Registration? How to Add Them (and Why It Matters)

Here is something many international couples in Korea do not know: your foreign spouse is not added to your Resident Registration copy (주민등록등본) automatically. The short answer: after your spouse gets an Alien Registration Card, apply at the community center to have your spouse listed. Do it early, because some benefits look at how long you have been listed together.

We did this right after we moved to Korea in 2023, and I am glad we did.

1. What is the Resident Registration copy?

The Resident Registration copy (주민등록등본) is one of the most common documents in Korea. It shows who lives at your address as one household. You need it for many things, such as:

  • Health insurance dependent registration
  • Housing applications and public rental housing
  • Child benefits, school, and many government services

2. Why your foreign spouse is not listed

Korean citizens are registered as residents with a resident registration number. Foreigners are registered separately through the Alien Registration Card. So even if you live together, your foreign spouse may not appear on the Korean spouse's Resident Registration copy unless you apply.

Since 2018, a foreign spouse can be listed on the Resident Registration copy upon application. The spouse still uses the Alien Registration number. No Korean resident registration number is given.

3. How to apply

  1. Get the Alien Registration Card first (at the immigration office).
  2. Visit your local community center (주민센터 / 행정복지센터).
  3. Ask to add your foreign spouse to the Resident Registration copy. The foreign spouse can apply, or the head of household or another household member can apply on their behalf.
  4. Bring the Alien Registration Card and your ID. Ask the center if anything else is needed.
  5. After that, you can print the copy, including your spouse, from Gov24 (정부24) online.

4. Why it matters: the years count

This is the most important part. Some benefits for multicultural families look at how long the foreign spouse has been listed at the same address with the Korean spouse.

For example, a multicultural-family special housing supply may require you to have lived at the same address as your spouse for at least 3 years (Incheon's program is one example). If your spouse was never added, those years may not count, and you could be left out of benefits.

We added my wife in early 2023, right after we arrived. Now, when I look at housing notices, I do not have to worry about this condition.

5. Our tips

  • Apply as soon as the Alien Registration Card comes out. The clock starts when your spouse is listed.
  • Check your copy on Gov24 after applying to make sure your spouse appears.
  • When you move, check again. Make sure your spouse is still listed at the new address.
  • Keep a printed copy for health insurance, school, and housing paperwork.

Quick summary

  1. Foreign spouses are not listed automatically on the Resident Registration copy.
  2. Apply at the community center after getting the Alien Registration Card.
  3. Some benefits require years listed together, such as 3 years for special housing supply.
  4. Do it early. It is free and simple.
